Nivoplan is a versatile grey or white powder made from cement, selected aggregates, and special synthetic resins, designed for easy application on vertical surfaces using a trowel or rendering spraying machine. The bonding requirements depend on the substrate’s porosity and the desired finish. To enhance its bonding properties, Planicrete can be added during mixing (1-2 litres per bag) as a partial replacement for water, which is especially crucial for thin applications over concrete or when the render will be covered with tiles or natural stone. As a normal-setting Portland-based product, the waiting time to fix tiles is determined by the development of mechanical strength. Mapei Planicrete is an SBR additive that, when mixed according to recommendations, improves the mechanical and adhesive characteristics of cement-based renders and provides higher compressive and flexural strengths. Nivoplan is classified as GP (“General Purpose Mortar for Internal/External Render”) and falls under category CS IV according to EN 998-1.)
Key Points
Composition and Application: Nivoplan is a cement-based powder designed for easy application on vertical surfaces with a trowel or rendering machine.
Bonding Properties: Its bonding effectiveness can be enhanced by adding Planicrete during mixing, which is particularly important for thin applications or when covered with tiles.
Setting and Tile Fixing: Nivoplan is a normal-setting product, and the waiting time for fixing tiles is based on the development of its mechanical strength.
Classification: Nivoplan is classified as GP (“General Purpose Mortar for Internal/External Render”) and meets category CS IV standards according to EN 998-1.

Nivoplan is idead for vertical surfaces, accommodating thicknesses ranging from 2 to 20 mm. It prepares surfaces for the installation of ceramic tiles or paint finishes. Some common applications include smoothing walls before ceramic tile installation, repairing old and damaged renders, levelling reinforced concrete surfaces in swimming pools and façades prior to applying ceramic coverings, and smoothing walls made of foamed cement, brick, or eraclit.
Preparation of the Substrate
The substrate must be compact and free from dust, loose particles, and contaminants such as oils, grease, paint, or glue residues. Nivoplan can be applied to damp surfaces, although the curing time may be slightly extended. Highly absorbent substrates, like brick or foamed cement, should be wetted before application, especially if the layer is less than 3 mm thick. Gypsum surfaces should be treated with Primer G before using Nivoplan.
Preparing the Mix
To prepare Nivoplan, mix it with clean water until a smooth, lump-free paste is achieved, preferably using a mechanical stirrer. For one 25 kg bag, use 5.0-5.5 litres of water, or mix with 3.0 litres of water and 2 litres of Planicrete. The mix remains usable for up to 2 hours after preparation.
Applying the Mix
It’s recommended to apply a first coat of Nivoplan to ensure complete coverage, followed immediately by the necessary levelling layer, with a maximum thickness of 2 cm at a time. Nivoplan can be applied with a rendering machine or a flat trowel, ensuring firm pressure for good adhesion. For spatterdash, the mix proportions are 25 parts Nivoplan, 2 parts Planicrete, and 3 parts water, achieving a thick slurry consistency suitable for application on damp surfaces.
Curing and Waiting Times
Nivoplan is a normal-setting Portland-based product, and the waiting time before fixing tiles depends on the development of mechanical strength. A 1 cm thick layer can support tiles after 12 hours under normal conditions (+23°C, 50% RH) on substrates with standard absorption levels. Higher temperatures or humidity may extend this wait to over 24 hours. Surfaces can be painted after at least 2 weeks, with longer times required in winter and shorter times in summer. To prevent premature curing, especially on sunlit or windy walls, it’s advisable to dampen the Nivoplan surface.
