Planicrete is a highly stable water dispersion of a specialized synthetic elastomer that is resistant to alkaline saponification and features a low glass transition temperature. This SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber)-based elastomer retains stability even after aging due to the tightly woven chemical binders that connect its polymer chains. This unique structure allows the polymer chains to adopt a parallel alignment when deformed, resulting in exceptional elasticity. Supplied as a highly fluid, white latex, Planicrete enhances the adhesion, plasticity, thixotropy, water retention, and overall workability of cement and aggregate mixes. When added to cementitious mixes, Planicrete provides several benefits, including improved adhesion to substrates, increased compressive and flexural strengths, enhanced resistance to abrasion and freeze-thaw cycles, and greater impermeability against diluted acids, saline solutions, and oils.

Key Points:

Specialized Elastomer: Planicrete is a stable water dispersion of an elastomer resistant to alkaline saponification, characterized by its low glass transition temperature.

Enhanced Properties: The addition of Planicrete to cement mixes improves adhesion, plasticity, thixotropy, water retention, and overall workability.

Improved Performance: Cementitious mixes with Planicrete exhibit better adhesion, higher compressive and flexural strengths, and enhanced resistance to abrasion and freeze-thaw cycles.

Durability: Planicrete enhances impermeability and provides better resistance to diluted acids, saline solutions, and oils, ensuring long-lasting performance.

This admixture is designed to enhance the mechanical and adhesive properties of cement-based screeds, renders, and thin smoothing layers, as well as to create highly adhesive cement bonding slurries. It can be used for various applications, including high-strength cement screeds for both interior and exterior use, cementitious bonding slurries for installing natural stone with the Mapestone system, and high-strength cement renders. Additionally, it improves the adhesion of conventional bonded screeds and those made from Mapecem Pronto or Topcem Pronto, while also being effective in adhesive shotcretes and cement mortars for repairs and finishing surfaces. It is particularly useful for finishing surfaces that experience high abrasion, such as industrial floors, ramps, and channels.

Preparation of the Substrate

The surfaces designated for screeds, renders, and smoothing layers modified with Planicrete must be solid, compact, and clean. Any crumbling or loose materials, dust, concrete residues, oil traces, form-release agents, and paint should be removed using careful sandblasting, brushing, or pressure washing. After cleaning, the substrate must be thoroughly wetted, ensuring that no excess water remains on the surface, as this can impact adhesion.

Bonding Screeds (10 to 35 mm): Planicrete can be used as an admixture to prepare bonding screeds for both interior and exterior applications, enhancing their adhesion and resistance. The aggregate blend should have a maximum diameter of 1/3 to 1/4 of the screed thickness, not exceeding 8 mm.

Floating Screeds (Minimum Thickness 35 mm): For floating screeds, it’s advisable to dilute Planicrete at a ratio of 1:4 with water and to use a slightly reduced amount of cement.

Preparation of Render: Planicrete is also effective as an admixture in cementitious-based renders for internal and external applications. It enhances the mortar’s thixotropy and water impermeability while improving adhesion to substrates and resistance to environmental factors. The recommended mix is as follows:

Planicrete: 1 kg

Water: 4 kg

Cement: 5.5 kg

Aggregates (0-3 mm): 20 kg

A scratch-coat layer can be applied prior to rendering to equalize the substrate’s absorbency and enhance adhesion, using the following mix:

Planicrete: 1 kg

Water: 1 kg

Cement: 3.5 kg

Aggregates (0-2 mm): 3.5 kg

For those preferring ready-mixed rendering mortar, Nivoplan can be used. Mix it with Planicrete diluted at a rate of 1:5 with water.

Preparation of Mortar for Filling Cavities: Planicrete is beneficial as an admixture in filler mortars, enhancing thixotropy for easier application on walls and ceilings, as well as improving adhesion and performance. The recommended mix is:

Planicrete: 1 kg

Water: 2.5 kg

Cement: 8 kg

Aggregates (0-3 mm): 16-24 kg

Bonding Slurries: Planicrete is particularly suitable for creating bonding slurries to be applied before screeds and plasters on existing cement surfaces. It can also be used for bonding screeds made from Mapecem Pronto or Topcem Pronto. The recommended mixing ratio is:

Planicrete: 1 kg

Water: 1 kg

Cement: 4 kg

Mixing: Dilute Planicrete with water in a suitable container according to the specific application, then pour the solution into a concrete mixer and add the cement and aggregates, which should be pre-mixed or partially mixed to prevent lumps. Mix for 2-3 minutes until smooth but avoid over-mixing. The setting time for mixes containing Planicrete is similar to standard mixes, with slightly longer workability.
