Mapei Shower Waterproofing Kit is ideal for waterproofing indoor floor and wall areas not susceptible to rising damp or continuous water submersion. This adaptable, anti-crack membrane should be applied prior to installing ceramic tiles or stone materials. The Shower Waterproofing Kit is suitable for use on the following surfaces:
- Moisture-resistant plasterboard
- Gypsum plaster
- Cementitious render
- Tile backer boards
- Existing ceramic finishes, following the application of Eco Prim T Plus primer (undiluted).
APPLICATION
Preparation of the Substrate
The substrate should meet specific criteria for a successful application:
- Ensure substrates are solid, clean, dry, and free from any oil, grease, old paint, or other substances that could affect adhesion. When applied over existing ceramic coatings, carefully assess the substrate for soundness and remove any mold or loose material. Cementitious substrates should be stable, dry, and free from rising damp.
- Allow the following minimum drying times before starting waterproofing/tiling:
- Gypsum plaster: 4 weeks (1 week for skim coats to plasterboard)
- Sand-cement render: 2 weeks
- Concrete: 6 weeks Ensure that construction boards are securely fastened, rigid, and free from protruding fixings, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proprietary boards.
- For highly absorbent or gypsum-based substrates, pre-treat them with Shower Waterproofing Kit Primer (ensure thorough penetration). Wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours until the primer is completely dry. For polished gypsum plaster, it must be dry-sanded, cleaned, and treated with Shower Waterproofing Kit Primer. Existing ceramic tile or natural stone substrates should receive a neat coat of Eco Prim T Plus (sold separately) primer before applying Mapegum WPS.
Application of the Product
To ensure a continuous and reliable Shower Waterproofing Kit application:
- Use Shower Waterproofing Tape to create elastic joints between internal wall angles, board joints, around pipe penetrations, and at junctions between walls and bath/shower trays. Carefully cut the tape to the correct size with a sharp knife or scissors. For shower trays, GRP shower bases, or baths, degrease the edges to be waterproofed with a suitable solvent like acetone. Lightly abrade the contact area and wipe it again with the solvent. No priming is needed for GRP surfaces.
- Apply a narrow strip of Mapegum WPS (slightly wider than the Shower Waterproofing Tape) using a brush to the designated areas, including shower trays and bases. When applying the tape to the shower base/bath, cut one side of the scrim edge, leaving the grey rubber center exposed. Do not cut for other areas, e.g., internal wall angles. Ensure the tape sits flush with the substrate, with no air pockets or creases.
- Apply Mapegum WPS evenly in thin coats, allowing each coat to dry before applying subsequent coats crossways (1-2 hours depending on temperature conditions). The final thickness should never be less than 0.8 mm (equivalent to a dry thickness of 0.5 mm) to create a consistent, flexible, and continuous coat. Ensure there are no gaps caused by substrate imperfections.
- After 12-24 hours from applying the final coat of Mapegum WPS (based on temperature conditions), the surface is ready for laying ceramic tiles or natural stone. Use MAPEI adhesives (C2 for cementitious-based or D2TE for water dispersion type) as per standard EN 12004.
Laying the Tiles
After installing the Shower Waterproofing Kit, wait:
- 12-24 hours on absorbent substrates
- 4-5 days on non-absorbent substrates
Lay the tiles using MAPEI adhesives (e.g., Keraquick S1, Adesilex P9, or Keraflex Maxi S1); the width of the joints depends on the tile size.
Grout the tile joints with Ultracolor Plus, Keracolor FF, Kerapoxy, or Kerapoxy CQ, available in various colors.
Expansion joints should be sealed with Mapesil AC or Mapesil LM silicone sealants.
