Topcem is a specialized hydraulic binder that, when combined with graded aggregates and water, creates mortars that harden in about 24 hours and dry within approximately 4 days. It is ideal for forming bonded, unbonded, and floating screeds on both new and existing concrete surfaces, facilitating the quick installation of various flooring materials, including PVC, linoleum, ceramic tiles, natural stone, carpet, or timber. Topcem is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, making it a versatile choice for projects that require rapid drying times.

Topcem is ideal for creating bonded, unbonded, and floating screeds on both existing and new concrete, making it suitable for the installation of various flooring materials, including PVC, linoleum, ceramic tiles, natural stone, carpet, and timber, where rapid drying is essential for quick installation. It is designed for both indoor and outdoor use, with applications including screeds that can support light foot traffic after just 12 hours and are completely dry in 4 days for laying resilient and timber flooring. Additionally, it allows for the installation of ceramic tiles after 24 hours and natural stone after 2 days. Topcem is also effective for patching and repairing floor screeds requiring quick restoration, as well as for preparing screeds that incorporate underfloor heating systems without needing polymer additives.
Preparing the Substrate
For unbonded or floating applications, all substrates are suitable for receiving a Topcem screed, which should be isolated with a sheet of polyethylene or similar material. In bonded applications, the substrate must be dry, capable of withstanding compression and tension, and free from cracks, dust, loose material, oil, paint, wax, and gypsum residues. If rising damp is a concern, a suitable waterproof membrane should be installed. Existing joints in the substrate must extend through the screed. For resilient installations, it is essential to conduct relative humidity and pH level readings on the concrete substrate following AS 1884 (2012). If necessary, apply a moisture vapor barrier, such as Primer MF or Mapeproof 1K Turbo, above the screed.
Unbonded Screeds (Minimum 35 mm thick)
Preparing the Mix
Carefully mix Topcem with graded aggregates of 0-8 mm in diameter and water in a mixer or batcher for at least 5 minutes. The mix should be spread, tamped, and levelled as quickly as possible, ideally within an hour after preparation. It is crucial to monitor the water quantity to achieve a “damp earth” consistency that will compact under a float finish to create a closed and smooth surface without water bleeding. Topcem, aggregates, and water can be combined using various equipment, including:
a drum mixer
an ordinary concrete mixer
a screw mixer
a truck mixer
an automatic pressure pump
Manual mixing with a shovel is not recommended, as it does not provide adequate dispersion of Topcem components, leading to an increased water requirement for the correct mix. If mechanical mixing is not feasible and hand mixing is necessary for smaller areas, it is advisable to dry mix the Topcem with the aggregates thoroughly before gradually adding water until a “damp earth” consistency is reached. For compressible substrates or when the thickness exceeds 60 mm, incorporate galvanized metal reinforcement in accordance with AS 3958.1.
