Ultracolor Plus is a premium mortar formulated from a unique blend of special hydraulic binders, graded aggregates, advanced polymers, water-repellent admixtures, organic molecules, and pigments. Its environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle has been assessed using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method and documented in Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) n° S-P-07051 and S-P-07044, complying with ISO 14025 standards, certified by The International EPD System. With extremely low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Ultracolor Plus prioritizes the health and safety of both installers and end-users, achieving an EC1 Plus certification from the German institute GEV. Notably, it contributes to earning crucial LEED credits due to its eco-friendly formulation, which contains no Portland cement, ensuring safety during use. The innovative Ultracolor technology features a special self-hydrating hydraulic binder that guarantees color uniformity and incorporates two groundbreaking technologies developed through MAPEI’s research: BioBlock and DropEffect®. The BioBlock technology inhibits mold growth by evenly distributing organic molecules within the mortar’s microstructure, while DropEffect® minimizes water absorption on surfaces.

Ultracolor Plus is suitable for internal and external grouting of floors and walls across a wide range of materials, including all types of ceramics (double-fired, single-fired, clinker, porcelain, etc.), terracotta, natural stone (marble, granite, agglomerates, etc.), and glass or marble mosaics.

APPLICATION
Preparing the Joints
Before grouting, ensure that the adhesive or mortar has fully hardened, adhering to the waiting times specified in the Technical Data Sheet. The joints should be clean, free from dust, and should be at least two-thirds deep down to the thickness of the tiles. Any adhesive or mortar that has seeped into the joints during tile installation must be removed while still fresh. For highly absorbent tiles or in conditions of high temperatures and wind, dampen the joints with clean water.
Preparation of the Mix
In a clean, rust-free container, mix Ultracolor Plus with 20-26% by weight of clean water. Stir while adding the grout and use a low-speed mixer to prevent air from being trapped, mixing until a smooth paste forms. Allow the mixture to stand for 3 minutes, then mix again briefly before use. The mix should be utilized within 30 minutes of preparation.
Application
Fill the joints with the Ultracolor Plus mixture using an appropriate Mapei trowel or rubber spreader, ensuring no gaps or lippage are left. While the grout is still wet, remove any excess Ultracolor Plus from the surface of the tiles by passing the trowel or spreader diagonally to the joints.
Finishing
Once the grout has lost its elasticity and becomes opaque—typically after 15 to 30 minutes—clean off any excess Ultracolor Plus with a damp hard cellulose sponge (such as the Mapei Sponge), working diagonally to the joints. Rinse the sponge frequently in two separate containers of water: one for removing grout and the other with clean water for rinsing. This process can also be performed using a machine equipped with a sponge belt.
If needed, finishing can continue when the mix is partially set, approximately 50-60 minutes after application, using a damp Scotch-Brite sponge to smooth the surface. Alternatively, a single-disk rotary machine with a special Scotch-Brite felt disk can be used for this task.
Avoid cleaning the joints too early (while the grout is still plastic), as this may pull grout out of the joints and create gaps, leading to color variations. In extremely hot, dry, or windy conditions, it is advisable to dampen the filled joints with Ultracolor Plus after a few hours to enhance its final properties.
Final cleaning of any powdery residue can be performed with a clean, dry cloth. If traces of cementitious residue remain after final cleaning, they can be removed using an acidic cleaner (e.g., UltraCare Keranet) after the grout has completely cured. For immediate residue removal during installation, the use of UltraCare Keranet Easy spray is recommended. For correct usage of UltraCare products, please consult the relevant Technical Data Sheets.
LIMITATIONS
- Composition: Ultracolor Plus does not contain Portland cement and must not be mixed with gypsum or other hydraulic binders.
- Water Addition: Once the mix has started to set, do not add water.
- Water Quality: Avoid mixing with salty or contaminated water.
- Temperature Range: Use the product at temperatures between +5°C and +35°C.
- Substrate Condition: Carry out grouting only on sufficiently dry or waterproofed substrates to prevent a whitish film from forming on the surface.
- Application Tip: To achieve a uniform color finish, do not sprinkle Ultracolor Plus powder onto filled grout joints.
- Special Conditions: For areas requiring resistance to acids, high hygiene standards, or sterile conditions, use a suitable acid-resistant epoxy grout.
- Joint Filling: Do not fill expansion and movement joints on walls and floors with Ultracolor Plus; instead, utilize an appropriate flexible sealant from the MAPEI range.
- Surface Testing: Certain tiles or stone materials may have micro-porosity or a rough surface; perform a preliminary test to check cleaning ease and consider applying a protective treatment to avoid grout penetration.
- Acid Cleaner Caution: If using an acid-based cleaner, test the product beforehand to ensure color resistance.
- Rinsing: Thoroughly rinse joints to remove any traces of acid.
