Mapesil AC is an acetic-crosslinking silicone sealant that provides excellent durability and flexibility for various sealing applications. It is especially suitable for sealing glass, ceramic, and anodised aluminium, with additional applications possible on concrete, wood, metal, painted surfaces, plastic, and rubber when used with a bonding enhancer. Its ability to create a perfectly elastic barrier makes it ideal for use in building, mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, and more. Available in both coloured and transparent options, Mapesil AC maintains its properties even after long-term exposure to environmental stress and temperature extremes.

Mapesil AC is ideal for use in the following applications:

  • Sealing joints in ceramic and cement wall and floor coverings, as long as they are not exposed to heavy abrasion.
  • Sealing joints between sinks or sanitary ware and ceramic tiles in kitchens, bathrooms, and showers, with colours matching the Mapei grout range.
  • Sealing expansion joints in swimming pools.
  • Assembling and sealing glass tile compositions and artistic stained glass windows.
  • Sealing glazing, door and window frames, portholes, and other glass elements.
  • Sealing air ducts and water pipes.
  • Sealing tanks, service pipes, and boilers.
  • Sealing joints exposed to high chemical and thermal stress.
  • Sealing materials with different thermal expansion coefficients.

 

APPLICATION

Preparing and Calculating Joint Size
All surfaces that will receive the sealant must be dry, solid, and free from dust, loose particles, oils, grease, wax, old paint, and rust. To ensure the sealant performs correctly, it must be able to elongate and compress freely. Therefore, during application:

  • The sealant should adhere only to the sides of the joint walls and not to the base.
  • The joint should be sized so that the maximum estimated extension does not exceed 25% of the initial width (calculated at +20°C).
  • For joints wider than 20 mm, the thickness should be half the width.
    To control the depth and prevent Mapesil AC from adhering to the base, the bottom of the joint should be filled with Mapefoam, a polyethylene cord.

Application of Primer FD
Where required, apply Primer FD with a small brush to the designated areas of the joint and allow a few minutes for the solvent to evaporate before applying Mapesil AC.

Application of Mapesil AC
Mapesil AC comes in 310 ml cartridges. To apply, cut the cartridge above the thread, attach the nozzle, and cut it at a 45° angle to create an opening that matches the joint size. Insert the cartridge into the gun and extrude the sealant. Before a superficial film forms, finish the surface of the sealant using a tool moistened with soapy water (e.g. UltraCare Smooth Silicone).

Curing
Mapesil AC cures upon exposure to air and humidity, becoming elastic. While the curing speed is minimally affected by temperature, it is primarily dependent on atmospheric humidity. Refer to Graph A for curing details at +23°C and 50% humidity.

LIMITATIONS

  • Avoid Using Mapesil AC for exterior joints between ceramic tiles and light-coloured natural stone, as dirt may accumulate in the joints. In such cases, please consult Mapei Technical Service for guidance on the most suitable solution.
  • For Surfaces Sensitive to Acids, such as limestone, use a neutral silicone sealant (e.g., Mapesil LM).
  • Mapesil AC is not recommended for highly plasticized materials or bituminous surfaces due to the potential release of substances that can weaken adhesion and alter the colour and resistance of the sealant.
  • While Mapesil AC Generally Offers Excellent Resistance to chemical agents, it is advisable to conduct a sample test in case of doubt, given the variety of products and conditions to which it may be applied.
  • Do Not Use Mapesil AC for sealing aquariums.
  • For Floor Joints Subject to Heavy Traffic, opt for a polyurethane sealant (e.g., Mapeflex PU 45 FT) or an epoxy-polyurethane sealant (e.g., Mapeflex E-PU 21 SL).
  • When Applying Mapesil AC in Areas of Continuous Immersion, such as inside a swimming pool tank, ensure that the joints are primed using Primer FD.
