ARDEX K71 is a cement-based compound designed for resurfacing concrete floors, creating a smooth, hard, and flat surface or base for coatings. Featuring the unique ARDEX ‘Rapidry Formula,’ it binds mixing water chemically for quick drying while achieving high strength. The self-levelling mortar, mixed with water, can be applied by hand trowel or pump at thicknesses ranging from 3-30mm or up to 50mm with aggregate or ARDEX SD-T Base Mix. Ideal for industrial and commercial areas, it is strong enough to withstand heavy traffic and offers excellent abrasion resistance. ARDEX K 71 is versatile, accommodating various surface finishes, including resin coatings, tiles, and natural stone, and can be applied easily by hand or pump. It also dries quickly, becoming walkable in 2 hours and ready for coatings in just 24 hours.

Key Points:

  1. Strength and Durability: Withstands heavy traffic and offers excellent abrasion resistance for industrial and commercial areas.
  2. User-Friendly: Can be applied from 3mm to 30mm neat or up to 50mm with aggregates or ARDEX SD-T Base Mix over existing concrete surfaces.
  3. Versatility: Suitable for various surface finishes, including resin coatings, tiles, resilient flooring, and natural stone.
  4. Rapid Drying: Walkable in 2 hours and ready for coatings in 24 hours, thanks to the ARDEX ‘Rapidry Formula.’

Storage and Shelf Life
ARDEX K 71 should be stored in its unopened packaging, off the ground, in cool, dry conditions, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored properly, it has a shelf life of 12 months from the date marked on the packaging. For the latest technical or health and safety information, refer to the current datasheet available online at www.ardex.co.uk.

ARDEX K 71 is a cement-based self-leveling compound designed to create a smooth, hard, and flat surface on concrete floors. Ideal for renovating or upgrading industrial and commercial flooring, it ensures a durable and even finish.

Substrate Preparation
Ensure the concrete surface is structurally sound, clean, and free from contaminants that could affect adhesion. The concrete must have a minimum surface tensile strength of 0.8 N/mm² (1.5 N/mm² for heavy-duty applications or resin coatings) as per BS 8204-3. Before mechanical preparation, remove substances such as polish, wax, grease, or oil with an appropriate degreaser. For mechanical preparation, use scabbling, grinding, or shot blasting to expose the aggregate, followed by thorough vacuuming before priming.

Priming
Prime all surfaces with ARDEX R 3 E or ARDEX R 5 E epoxy primer, applied as a sand-blinded coat using ARDEX Fine Aggregate (1-1.5 mm). Weak concrete should be mechanically prepared to solid concrete. For direct-to-earth subfloors, ensure the presence of a damp-proof membrane (DPM). If the DPM is absent or damaged, or if the substrate is damp, refer to ARDEX DPM 1 C or ARDEX DPM 1 C R datasheets for guidance. When applying ARDEX K 71 over a previously aggregated ARDEX K 71 base, remove contamination and prime with ARDEX P 51 diluted 1:3 (primer:water). Allow the primer to dry before applying ARDEX K 71 at a minimum thickness of 5mm.

Mixing
For each 25kg bag, mix with up to 4.5L of clean water until the mixture is lump-free, using a mixing paddle and electric drill at 600–1000 rpm. Do not exceed 4.5L of water per bag.

Application
Pour the mixed ARDEX K 71 compound onto the prepared subfloor. The mixture will self-level during the first 10 minutes of its 25-minute working time at 20°C. Use an ARDEX Pin Leveller for thicker applications, or a spiked roller for finishing. Apply at temperatures of 5°C or above, as lower temperatures will extend the working time, and higher temperatures will shorten it. For large or thick applications, it is recommended to pump ARDEX K 71.

Thickness
Apply neat ARDEX K 71 at thicknesses from 3-30mm. For applications of 10-30mm, mix in an equal volume of 3mm ARDEX Coarse Aggregate, and for 30-50mm, use an equal volume of 8-10mm pea shingle aggregate. Aggregate mixes require a minimum 5mm smoothing coat of neat ARDEX K 71 after priming with ARDEX P 51 diluted 1:3. For large areas or thick applications, consider using ARDEX SD-T B Rapid Drying Industrial Base Mix.

Wearing Surfaces
Protect the ARDEX K 71 surface from oils, salts, and water by applying a suitable sealer or resin coating. Always perform a compatibility trial before applying resin flooring systems. Coatings can be applied after 24 hours at 20mm thickness and after 48 hours at 50mm, provided the conditions are optimal (20°C, ≤65% RH). Lower temperatures will extend the working time, while higher temperatures will reduce it. Ceramic tiles can be laid when the surface is walkable.

Specific Conditions and Abrasion Resistance
ARDEX K 71 is suitable for heavy abrasion and wheeled traffic in industrial settings such as workshops and warehouses. However, excessive use, such as dragging heavy equipment or pallet trucks with nails, may cause surface damage. It’s recommended to seal ARDEX K 71 for easier cleaning and stain protection.

Coverage
Approximately 1.78kg of ARDEX K 71 powder is required per square meter per millimeter of thickness. A 25kg bag covers approximately 4.7m² at 3mm thickness. For aggregated mixes, a 25kg bag mixed with an equal volume of ARDEX Coarse Aggregate covers approximately 2.39m² at 10mm or 0.95m² at 25mm thickness. With pea shingle, coverage is about 0.75m² at 30mm or 0.45m² at 50mm thickness. Allow extra mortar for rough or uneven surfaces.
